The Prevention and Emergency Management Division enforces applicable laws and standards found in the International Fire Code through:

  • Fire and life safety inspections
  • Site, building and fire protection plan review
  • Fire investigations

The division also coordinates local emergency management planning, NIMS (National Incident Management System) compliance, and collaborates with other emergency management agencies in regional emergency management planning, preparedness, and training exercises.

Public information and education programs include fire safety, injury prevention, and disaster preparedness that are delivered in both English and Spanish. These programs are implemented through the following:

  • Free smoke detectors - Call (509) 664-3950 for information
  • Public and private schools
  • Fire station tours
  • Support of the fire and life-safety needs of local business and industry
  • Fire safety and injury prevention special events
