Recreation Programs and Events

 

In a healthy community, residents choose to participate in a range of recreational activities. These activities are typically offered by multiple public and private organizations. By participating in recreation activities, residents are physically and mentally healthier, and they are better connected to their neighbors and to the community.

Winter Flake Festival
A twilight parade, hay rides, games, sledding, crafts and more help kick off the holiday season. The evening culminates in the lighting of the holiday tree at the Wenatchee Center. The parade starts at 6:00pm. The event is brought to you through a partnership between Mission Ridge, the Wenatchee Downtown Association and the City of Wenatchee.

Youth Basketball League
Players must have registered by October 23rd for this fun, introductory basketball program for children in third through fifth grades. This program is designed to refine basketball skills and techniques. All players must view a concussion video at WIAA.com and complete a Concussion Information Sheet prior to participating. The program runs November through January, with practices held during the week and competitions on Saturdays. Click here to download a registration form and more information.

The City of Wenatchee complies with the State of Washington’s “Fair Play in Community Sports Act” (Chapter 467, 2009 Laws, effective date July 26, 2009) that prohibits discrimination against any person in a community athletics program on the basis of gender. Any questions or comments please contact the Wenatchee Parks and Recreation Department.

Indoor Playground
This program is designed for toddlers and parents to play and socialize in a warm place during the cold winter months. A wide variety of fun toys are provided along with coffee & tea for the adults. For ages 4 and under. Click here for program details.

After School Action
This fun, drop-in after school program give kids a chance to socialize and participate recreation activities in a supervised environment. After School Action is held at the Wenatchee Community Center Monday through Fridays from 3:00-6:00pm. Activities include video games, computer use, homework help, sports, games, air hockey, snacks, special projects, and other activities and events scheduled throughout the year. Women's Volleyball League
Register in the Fall for this fun, recreational volleyball program for women. The league is held at Foothills Middle School on Tuesday evenings from February 2 through April 27. The cost is $10.00 for City of Wenatchee residents and $11.00 for non-residents.

Special Olympic Sports
Special Olympics is sports training and competition for individuals 8 years old and older with developmental disabilities. Winter sports include: basketball, speed skating, figure skating, alpine skiing, and cross-country skiing. Wenatchee is the site for the Special Olympics Washington Winter Games in March. A Special Olympics Medical Participation Form must be filled out prior to the first practice. It can be downloaded by clicking here, picked up at the Parks and Recreation Office or printed from www.sowa.org. For more information click here or contact the Parks and Recreation Department. Polar Bear Plunge
The Polar Bear Plunge is a unique opportunity for individuals, businesses and organizations to support Special Olympic athletes by jumping, running or crawling into the frigid waters of the Columbia River. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department to find out how to register.

Special Needs Social Program
The Social Program is designed to be a unique recreational opportunity for individuals with developmental disabilities to build relationships and participate in the community. There is no fee to participate except that participants are responsible for paying for their own meals. Winter Special Olympic Games

Each year in March, Wenatchee is the host city of the Washington State Special Olympics Winter Games Competition. Over 1,400 athletes from across the State travel to the Wenatchee Valley to compete in basketball, figure skating, speed skating, alpine skiing, and cross-country skiing. Volunteers are always needed to help with the event. If you would like to help, contact the Parks and Recreation Department for more information.

Hershey Track and Field
Register this Spring for the Hershey Track and Field Program. Kids ages 9-14 can join us for the exciting Hershey National Track and Field Youth Program. The program is designed to promote physical fitness and participation. It is held at the end of May and early June.

Women's Volleyball League
Register in the Fall for this fun, recreational volleyball program for women. The league is held at Foothills Middle School on Tuesday evenings from February 2 through April 27. The cost is $10.00 for City of Wenatchee residents and $11.00 for non-residents.

Family Hike Series
These FREE hiking trips in April and May familiarize participants with established trails surrounding Wenatchee. Hike leaders guide the group along family-friendly trails while sharing fun and interesting information and answering questions about the environment. Pre-registration is required as space on each trip is limited. Open to all ages.

Café Mela Summer Concert Series
Bring a picnic blanket and the whole family to Centennial Park to enjoy these fun, free outdoor concerts Friday nights during the Summer months. Concessions are available and there are activities and crafts for the kids. Music begins at 7:00pm. If you are interested in performing, click here to download a 2010 Performer Application.

Independence Day Celebration
Bring the whole family and join us at Walla Wall Point Park for a celebration of our nation’s Independence Day. Visit the food and craft vendors or listen to the live music and entertainment until our fantastic fireworks display begins. Fireworks begin at approximately 10:15pm. Come early to reserve your spot in the park.

As a community event, funding for the fireworks is through donations. To contribute to the purchase of the fireworks please contact Caryl Morrell at (509) 888-3282.

Tardeadas
This series, “Tardeadas” is a traditional Mexican family event that is held just before sunset. Families get together for dancing, playing sports, reading, or listening to live music. Tardeadas is held on Sundays from 4:00-8:00pm during the summer months in Lincoln Park.

Swimming Lessons
We are proud to offer the American Red Cross “Learn to Swim Program”. Lower level classes focus on developing water skills that will help students be safe in the water. Upper level classes focus on stroke technique and advanced water safety skills. Sessions are Monday through Friday for two weeks. Classes are offered at 10:00am, 10:45am, 11:30am, 5:00pm, and 5:45pm, and are 30 minutes in length. Registration begins in mid-June.

Wading Pool Program
The wading pools at Methow, Pennsylvania, and Washington Park are filled with water from 1:00-5:00pm, Monday through Friday from mid-June to mid-August. Parks staff lead fun activities including: games, arts and crafts, wading pool activities, and much more. And it’s free to participate! There’s no need to register, just come join us for some wading pool fun. For ages 6-14. Children under 6 are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Summer Day Camps
Activities include field trips, arts and crafts, games, swimming, indoor and outdoor activities and much more. Camps run mid-June through August, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5:30pm. Pre-registration before the first day of camp is required as space is limited in this popular program. You may sign up for one week or the whole summer. Summer Rowing Camp                                                                                                                                           The Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club welcomes junior rowers to this inaugural summer rowing camp.  Participants will learn the fundamentals of sweep-style rowing through five sessions on land and on the Columbia River.  For ages 14-18.  Bring sun screen, water, and wear tennis shoes.  No loose clothing.  Participants receive a camp t-shirt and skills that last a lifetime!  Click here to download a 2010 Registration Form. 

Youth Tennis Lessons
Youth tennis lessons are appropriate for the novice youth tennis player, over the age of 7. Kids looking to get involved in a new sport can pick up tennis with some fun instruction. Lessons focus on the basic fundamentals of tennis, including basic ground strokes (forehand, backhand), overhead and serve and volley play. Instruction is designed to teach the basics of tennis in a fun and exciting manner. Students provide their own racquet and one can of tennis balls. Youth tennis lessons are held at Walla Walla Point Park in July.

Skyhawks Basketball Camp
Skyhawks basketball breaks down this exhilarating sport into fundamental skills that all athletes, no matter their skill level, need to succeed. Coaches will lead the athletes through game-speed drills and exercises, focusing on ball handling, passing, shooting, defense, and rebounding. Developing a refined player who knows how to combine these skills is the goal of every Skyhawks basketball program. Athletes will put their skills to the test in an end-of-the-week tournament. All participants receive a basketball, t-shirt, and a merit award. This camp is held for one week in mid-July. For ages 7-14. Register at www.skyhawks.com.

Skyhawks Soccer Camp
Soccer camp teaches young athletes the fundamental skills of soccer through fun games and exercises. Participants test their new expertise in skills and strategy through interactive group activities and scrimmages. Camp is held at Walla Walla Point Park for one week in mid-July and includes a leather soccer ball and t-shirt. Held Monday-Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm, the camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-14. Skyhawks Mini-Hawk Camp
The Mini-Hawk program helps young children explore soccer, baseball, and basketball in a day-program setting. There is no pressure, just lots of fun, while these young athletes participate in all three sports through unique Skyhawks games. Camp is held at Walla Walla Point Park for one week in mid-July. Camp is held Monday-Friday from 9:00am-12:00pm and is open to children ages 4-6. Register at www.skyhawks.com.

Special Olympic Sports
Our Special Olympics sports program is for individuals with developmental disabilities (8 years and older) to participate in sports training and competition. Summer Special Olympic Sports include: softball and golf. Teams are co-ed and are made up of athletes of all ages. An Application for Participation (PDF) must be completed for each athlete and signed by a physician. There is a $5.00 registration fee to play each sport.

Autumn quarter programs are currently being developed. The following is a sample of what we are working on:

City Halloween Carnival, presented by Subway
Join us as we dress up and have a great time playing carnival games, eating treats and just enjoying ourselves. This is a safe and fun way to spend Halloween. For ages 10 and under. 

Subway Movies in the Park
Pull out the lawn chairs or blanket and bring the whole family for fun, FREE movie nights in Walla Walla Point Park presented by SUBWAY. Concessions will be available. Click here for movie schedule and more information.

Fall Into Fitness
Stay in shape for the Winter Special Olympics season or just lose a few pound before the holidays. Our trained aerobics instructor will have your heart pumping in this fun and active exercise program.

Youth Scholarship Program
The Youth Scholarship Program was made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of North Central Washington. The program provides financial assistance for children ages 3-14 and allows them to participate in selected City of Wenatchee Parks and Recreation programs. Scholarships may be used for the following programs: swimming lessons up to and including Y3 level, day camps and youth sports programs (excluding Skyhawks).

As funding is limited, assistance is typically not for the full cost of registration. Applicants shall provide proof of participation in a reduced school lunch program with their completed application. Application forms are available for download by clicking here. Scholarships are limited to up to $50.00 per child per year as funding allows.
