Low Barrier Emergency Shelter Study Presentation

Post Date:05/14/2018 10:21 AM
The public is invited to attend an information meeting discussing the results of a study on the opportunities, steps and challenges necessary to consider the potential siting of a low barrier emergency shelter in the Wenatchee Valley. The meeting will be hosted by the Wenatchee City Council on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 5:15 PM as a component of their regularly scheduled monthly City Workshops.

The Chelan-Douglas Homeless Steering Committee sponsored a study to determine the feasibility of establishing a low barrier shelter for homeless individuals and families in the Chelan-Douglas region. The shelter would be available for those in need of immediate housing, particularly for those who have had challenges accessing services in the past. For decades, many local homelessness advocates have called for this type of shelter to ensure unsheltered individuals establish immediate linkages to a safe, clean shelter where they can be connected with service providers and resources to help them located, obtain, and maintain permanent housing. Utilization of a low barrier shelter is considered a national best practice and in line with the counties’ Housing First strategy outlined in the Chelan-Douglas Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness.

The public will be provided an opportunity to ask questions about the study upon conclusion of the presentation. A second opportunity to hear the presentation and provide comments or questions will be provided at the Chelan-Douglas Homeless Task Force meeting on June 26th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the Confluence Technology Center, 285 Technology Center Way, Wenatchee, WA 98801.

Members of the public and interested parties are encouraged to review the draft report recommendations, entitled, “Landscape Assessment: The Chelan/Douglas County Crisis Response System Through a Low-Barrier Lens”, prepared by Building Changes, on the City of Wenatchee web page at www.wenatcheewa.gov. Use of the final report will assist policy makers on the Chelan-Douglas Homeless Steering Committee as they evaluate funding allocations and programs in 2019. The study is also assisting homeless care agencies evaluate and weigh new opportunities and approaches to address homelessness in the region.
