The City of Wenatchee is embarking on a major update to its Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive update will:
- Identify and implement the community’s vision, values, and priorities.
- Extend the Comprehensive Plan 20-year planning horizon to 2046.
- Comply with the State’s Growth Management Act and regional planning requirements, including revisions to requirements since the last major update.
An updated Comprehensive Plan, due June 2026, will set the direction for City investment and regulation over the next 20 years. This can mean more housing choices, new places to work, better connected roads and parks, new recreation opportunities, and improved public services. The City is committed to a robust, inclusive engagement process that encourages community-wide input through targeted outreach and relationship building, so that projects and priorities identified in the Plan represent the values and goals of the community. The City commits to:
- Raising awareness of the planning effort and engaging the full community, with specific focus on those historically underrepresented or less frequently engaged.
- Offering diverse, convenient ways to participate, such as meeting communities where they are, collaborating with community-based organizations, joining existing events, and leveraging the City’s networks and initiatives.
- Building long-term relationships and trust with groups and organizations not previously engaged, opening doors for future partnerships with the City.
- Applying culturally relevant and equitable engagement practices to ensure that key audiences’ voices and perspectives are integrated into the Plan.
- Updating the Comprehensive Plan recommendations to reflect the community’s priorities, concerns, and aspirations.
Staying engaged through the update process can ensure your input is well represented in the new Plan.
In Phase 1 we are asking the community to share your broad ideas. The things you love about Wenatchee, the things that aren’t working well for you, the experience you want to have as a resident, business owner or shopper, are concepts that will help City staff prioritize potential new goals and projects in the Plan.
In Phase 2 we are asking the community to dive into the details of the potential new goals and projects to identify what is the most important and think technically about how they might be implemented so that City staff can draft formal goals for the Plan.
In Phase 3 we are asking the community to review drafted goals and projects, to ensure that the drafts represent the priorities shared in Phases 1 & 2.
In Phase 4 we are asking the community to engage with your legislative officials to let them know the drafted plans are your voice, as the Planning Commission and City Council review the draft plans, hold public hearings and finally approve a final draft.
This continuous process developing the Plan with the community should produce a Plan that includes the technical ways the City is required to meet community needs for things like water and sewer, transportation systems, and emergency preparedness; implemented in a manor that supports the community vision for our future city form.
