What is the purpose of the Junior City Council?
The Wenatchee City Council created the Junior City Council in order to engage high school students in local governance, civic responsibility, and leadership development. The program provides students with hands-on experience in municipal government, allowing them to voice their perspectives, contribute to community projects, and gain an understanding of policy-making. The Junior City Council serves as an advisory body to the Wenatchee City Council on youth aspects of all city functions, including but not limited to finance, public works, parks, recreation, cultural services, community development, information technology, public safety, and human resources.
Who can be on the Junior City Council?
The members of the Junior City Council must be:
- enrolled and in good standing in a high school program in the Wenatchee School District jurisdictional limits and shall remain enrolled during their entire term in office
- a home school student who resides in the city of Wenatchee that has a rank of freshman through senior and shall remain a resident during their entire term or office
- a student who resides in the city of Wenatchee, but attends a high school located outside the Wenatchee School District jurisdictional limits.

How much time will it take a student?
- Term Length: Two academic years.
- Meetings: Once a month (1.5 to 2 hours per meeting).
- Community Engagement: Members must complete at least 20 hours of community service related to city projects or events.
- Policy Participation: Attend at least one official City Council meeting per quarter and provide a youth perspective on relevant issues.
- Project Involvement: Collaborate on at least one community initiative or policy recommendation.
What is the application process?
Please fill out the JUNIOR CITY COUNCIL APPLICATION. Members will be selected based on leadership skills, community involvement, and interest in civic affairs with a desire to achieve a representation across the various schools.
